I Was Here

MUCH has been happening here and I will blog about some of it when I can find the time.  Meanwhile this powerful and beautiful song is worth a share.  Especially the message at the end of the video.

World Humanitarian Day
One day, one message, one goal.

To inspire people all over the world
To do something good, no matter
How big or small, for someone else.

“I Was Here” performed on World Humanitarian Day 19 August 2012

I wanna leave my footprints on the sands of time
Know there was something that, meant something that, I left behind
When I leave this world, I’ll leave no regrets
Leave something to remember, so they won’t forget!

I was here!
I lived, I loved
I was here!
I did, I’ve done
Everything that I wanted and it was more than I thought it would be.
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here

I wanna say I lived each day until I die
And know that I meant something, in somebody’s life
The hearts that I’ve touched will be the proof that I leave
That I made a difference!
And this world will see!

I was here!
I lived, I loved
I was here!
I did, I’ve done
Everything that I wanted and it was more than I thought it would be.
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here!
I lived!  I loved!
I was here!
I did!  I’ve done!
Everything that I wanted and it was more than I thought it would be!
I will leave my mark so everyone will know!
I was here!

I just want them to know
That I gave my all, did my best, brought someone some happiness,
Left this world a little better just because
I was here…

I was here!
I lived, I loved
I was here!
I did, I’ve done
Everything that I wanted and it was more than I thought it would be.
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here!
I lived!  I loved!
I was here!
I did!  I’ve done!
I was here!………….

What will you do?

For me there’s something perverse about this (sorry Helen)

The highly individualistic society from where Beyonce describes her need to be remembered “wanting to leave footprints” is not universal – as you may discover in Cambodia, as we do in Aboriginal Australia.

Not all people cry out their importance “I was here” (which is the equivalent of a graffiti tag scrawling your name on a wall!). In most cultures people go about their daily lives as part of an endless chain of humanity, forgotten within 2 generations.

It’s only us in the West who want to be heros.

Yes, we should respond to Humanitarian crises – but not so we will be remembered (I did!), but so we fulfill our ethical responsibilities: generosity, compassion and humility.
